G-WADI, with funding from the U.S. State Department's Office of Conservation and Water, helped organize and fund the "6th Workshop on Water Resources in Developing Countries: Hydroclimate Modeling, Information Tools and Simulation Techniques", from May 20-31, 2024. One hundred twelve water professionals from around the word participated at the event, led by and held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, a UNESCO Category 1 center in Trieste, Italy.

The U.S. support was targeted towards the in-person participation of African women--three from Ghana and one from Tunisia.

Professors Soroosh Sorooshian, Amir Aghakouchak and Phu Nguyen--all from the University of California, Irvine's Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing (a G-WADI partner)--lectured on topics such as:

  • Satellite precipitation estimation at CHRS UCI: Algorithm Development & Challenges
  • The low-resolution secrets of high-resolution statistical downscaling
  • UC-Irvine CHRS’s global satellite precipitation products and tools
  • Applications of PERSIANN data and CHRS web-based interfaces
  • Hydrologic Modeling Requirements: Data Requirement issues
  • Hands-on Introduction to Hydrologic Modeling
  • Bias adjustment of PERSIANN-CCS estimates using rain gauge observation

Most of the tools discussed in these sessions were developed in collaboration with G-WADI and/or the International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management, at the US Army Corps of Engineers' Institute for Water Resources. These include the global real-time precipitation observation system iRain and the integrated system for global satellite precipitation data and information, RainSphere. Raw data on many CHRS products can be downloaded at https://chrsdata.eng.uci.edu/ .
